ICube laboratory

The Laboratory of Engineering Sciences, Computer Science and Imaging is a joint research unit (UMR 7357), established on January 1, 2013, through the merging of several research teams in Strasbourg. Its name, ICube (“I-Cube”), reflects its three core fields of expertise — Ingénierie (Engineering), Informatique (Computer Science) and Imagerie (Imaging).

It operates under the joint supervision of the University of Strasbourg, the French National Centre for Scientific Research (CNRS), the National Institute for Applied Sciences of Strasbourg (INSA Strasbourg), part of INSA group - the National Institutes of Science and Technology), and the National School for Water and Environmental Engineering of Strasbourg (ENGEES).

Within the CNRS, ICube is affiliated with two institutes: CNRS Informatics and CNRS Engineering

Bridging digital and physical worlds

ICube stands out for its unique position with research at the crossroads of the physical and digital worlds.
Its research teams explore, design, and experiment with physical and algorithmic methods, as well as with emerging technologies that connect the real world — encompassing both matter and living systems — with digital data and virtual environments.

Unified by a central focus on imaging, ICube combines expertise in engineering and computer science across three main areas of application:

Organization and infrastructure

ICube is organized into 4 departments, 17 research teams, and 6 transversal research themes designed to promote collaboration across disciplines.
It also hosts 7 state-of-the-art technology platforms covering areas such as imaging, medical robotics, artificial intelligence, electronics, remote sensing, and biomechanics. These platforms are open to both the scientific community and industrial partners.

Location and scientific environment

Located across 4 Strasbourg campuses (Illkirch campus, Central campus, Medical campus, and Cronenbourg campus), ICube enjoys a uniquely close relationship with the university hospitals and several major research institutes, including the Institute of Image-Guided Surgery(IHU), the Research Institute against Digestive Cancers(IRCAD), the Strasbourg Federation of Translational Medicine (FMTS), and the French National Institute of Health and Medical Research (Inserm).

A major scientific community

ICube includes close to 750 members, among them over 430 permanent staff: university professors, associate professors, CNRS researchers, hospital practitioners, engineers, and technical personnel.
The laboratory also hosts more than 270 non-permanent researchers, including doctoral candidates, post-doctoral fellows, and visiting scientists.

Innovation and international recognition

ICube holds more than 200 active patents and is recognized internationally for its software developments, and for contributing to Internet standards (IETF), programming languages (ISO/AFNOR), and major industrial sectors such as automotive engineering.
Its research partnerships foster start-up creation and practical applications, strengthening ICube’s role as a major research center in Alsace and beyond.
