Title: Ganymed Robotics: Surgical scene understanding for robot-assisted knee replacement surgery

Abstract: Ganymed Robotics is building the next generation of interventional robotics for orthopedics. Founded in 2018, Ganymed has filed multiple patents and won international and national awards for innovation, including the Ilab contest in 2019. Our team of 14 engineers and PhDs works in close collaboration with renowned high-volume surgeons to design an entirely new kind of co-manipulated, intelligent device for the operating room. We combine breakthrough innovations in Computer Vision, Artificial Intelligence, Advanced Mechatronics and Robotics to develop the future standard of joint replacement surgery, starting with the knee.
Perceiving and making sense of the surgical scene is a crucial aspect for building assistance systems for surgeons and their team, such as Ganymed’s robotic device. However, the need for large volumes of annotated and structured data for AI-based methods hinders the development of such tools. In this talk, we present the results of a study on the use of transfer learning to train deep neural networks with scarce annotated data to automatically detect a patient’s anatomy on live images captured during total knee replacement procedures.

Bio: Nicolas Loy Rodas is a Research Scientist in Computer Vision and Robotics at Ganymed Robotics. He graduated with a Master’s Degree in Vision and Robotics from the University of Strasbourg and an Engineering’ Degree in Mechatronics from the National Institute of Applied Sciences of Strasbourg, both in 2013. From 2013 to 2019, he was a member of the research group CAMMA on Computational Analysis and Modeling of Medical Activities at IHU Strasbourg. He completed his PhD in Medical Robotics in 2018 and was awarded with the “Best PhD award” in the domain of Science & Technology by the University of Strasbourg in 2019.
