Abstract:
The digitalization of production systems into cyber-physical production systems is central to Industry 4.0, yet the technologies that drive it (the Internet of Things, cloud computing, artificial intelligence, etc.) also introduce new vulnerabilities, exposing factories to disruptions they were not designed to absorb. This thesis treats resilience not as a property to be restored after a disruption, but as one to be designed into the system and quantified. Its first contribution is a service-oriented architecture grounded in socio-ecological resilience, whose four-layer mathematical model represents a production system as a stability landscape over its feasible configurations and condenses this landscape into a single, computable resilience index. Its second contribution is a seven-phase method that operationalizes the architecture into an iterative AS-IS/TO-BE decision cycle, enabling a production manager to instantiate the model for a given factory, diagnose its resilience, and evaluate candidate transformations against it. The architecture and the method are illustrated through a real-world IoT deployment in an e-coating system.
